Julie
March 6 - 8 · Chain Theatre (99-Seat Theater)
Our contemporary reimagination of August Strindberg’s Miss Julie, in which maybe the tragedy isn’t so “naturalistic.”
A midsummer night. A dangerous game. Power, desire, and the rules no one admits still exist.
August Strindberg’s Miss Julie is often read as a story of seduction and collapse. This affair between an aristocratic woman and a servant crossing a line for one night isn’t just a scandal, it’s an unflinching look at how class, gender, and survival instincts grind clash.
Strindberg believed that Julie’s tragedy was inevitable. That who you are, where you come from, and what’s in your blood would always win.
We’re not so sure anymore.
So we asked different questions:
What does class look like now? Who holds power today?
And what invisible rules are still quietly deciding who gets to rise and who doesn’t?
In our version, Julie becomes a modern figure: the daughter of a famous film producer. The nepo baby catches herself between inherited privilege and relentless self-doubt under the influence of her new man, Jean. And Kristine, once silent in the shadows, now steps into the light. Controlled and clear-headed, she is no longer a footnote in this story. Kristine, Julie, and Jean portray a conversation about identity, survival, and how to define yourself in a world that claims to be open but remains stubbornly stratified.
An old aristocratic tragedy collides with a very modern class reality.

Sensory Map
To help you navigate the show's intense themes, we provide a detailed Sensory Map (available in print on the day of performance). This guide includes:
A minute-by-minute timeline of "high-intensity" moments (loud sound, blood, and physical contact).
A clear breakdown of potentially triggering off-stage sounds and suggested actions.
Please note that this sensory map will partially or fully spoil the story. If you need a sensory map, please inform our house crew when you check in to the theater.
Relaxed Performance
We believe the visceral power of Strindberg’s work should be accessible to everyone. Our Relaxed Performance is specifically adapted for neurodivergent individuals, those with sensory processing sensitivities, or anyone who prefers a less formal, more predictable theater environment. The Relaxed Performance for Julie is the March 7, 2:00 PM show.
During this specific performance, we make the following modifications to ensure a comfortable experience:
Gentle Lighting: The house lights will remain at a dimmed level throughout the show. There will be no moment of complete darkness during your experience. If any light source is directly pointing at the audience, it will be adjusted. All strobe and atmospheric effects are reduced.
Modified Sound with Visual Cues: Sudden, loud noises—including the gunshot effects—will be performed at a significantly lower volume. Additionally, a visual warning light will glow on the side of the theater ten seconds before any high-volume sound occurs. The house manager will point to that light before our show starts.
Softened Physicality: The fight choreography has been adjusted to be less intense. Highly explicit public displays of affection have been re-choreographed to be more gestural and suggestive.
Open-Door Policy: If you need to leave the auditorium, you may do so at any time and return when you are ready. The lobby will serve as a quiet “chill-out” zone. Unfortunately, due to our technical constraints, we cannot provide a TV monitor in the lobby for you to keep up with the show.
Sensory Map: Also don’t forget that a detailed sensory map is available to all performances. See above for details.
Please note that, due to these adjustments, this performance does not fully carry the artistic intention of our creative team. It is intentionally less immersive to prioritize audience comfort.
If you are seeking the full-volume, high-intensity, and fully immersive artistic vision, please consider joining us for one of our three standard performances.

Topaz Gao is a director, designer, and educator based in New York who believes in theater’s intrinsic ability to foster community through both its process and presentation.
Their projects have always emphasized a balance of sustainable practice and creative ambition, striving to empower each of their collaborators by breaking down standard theatrical hierarchies and creating a communal space where each department can meaningfully affect the final performance. Similarly, they hope the stories they put onstage will allow audiences to find and feel community, as well as feel inspired to enact change outside of the theater.
