New Work Development

Home > About Us

At where words on a page can tell, and new stories are beheld.

Shall See Theater is now accepting script submissions for our script development library and consideration for future production.

We are seeking compelling new works—whether full plays or short pieces—that explore East Asian cultures past and present, as well as stories centered on dialogue between Asian and Western worlds. We welcome works that challenge form, language, and genre, while maintaining a strong artistic core.

Development of Your Work

We offer two primary pathways for developing submitted works:

Shall See Theater Presents

As part of our 2025–2026 Artistic Season, Shall See Theater will produce 2–3 full-scale productions, scheduled for Spring 2026. If your play aligns with our mission and demonstrates exceptional relevance, coherence, and artistry, it may be selected for one of these productions.

Selected works will be fully produced by a team of professional emerging theater artists—including directors, actors, designers, and production staff—and staged at a public venue in New York City, likely within an Off-Broadway or Off-Off-Broadway setting. We will engage in further, more detailed conversations about the mode of collaboration and provide essential materials and support throughout the production process, if your work is selected.

Glimpse Workshops

If your piece shows strong promise and resonates with our values, we may invite you to participate in our Glimpse Workshop Series. Glimpse offers a platform for early-stage development, giving artists, producers, and select public audiences a peek into your work-in-progress.

The process begins with a closed table read featuring emerging New York actors. We will invite you to attend either in person or virtually, depending on your location. Based on internal feedback and the trajectory of development, selected works may advance to a public staged reading. In these cases, your work will receive 3–5 rehearsals with emerging directors and actors prior to the reading.

Script Submission

We Accept:

  • Original plays, musicals, and dance-theater pieces

    • If your primary script language is other than English or Mandarin Chinese, please include a detailed synopsis and character description in English.

  • One-act or full-length works, and 10-page plays intended as complete pieces

    • 10-page plays will not be considered directly as Shall See Theater Presents productions, but might be invited into a developmental process via Glimpse or a more specific incubation process.

If you are submitting a musical or play with music, all music must be original (we do not accept jukebox musicals).

Required Submission Materials:

  1. Full script (PDF format preferred; watermarking encouraged) or 10-page samples and a character list (must be pages mainly with spoken words, i.e., dialogues or monologues);

  2. A cover letter introducing your piece and stating your intent;

    • If your work is an adaptation, please indicate whether you hold the rights or are seeking assistance securing them.

  3. A brief artist bio introducing yourself and your creative background.

Eligibility:

  • All submitted works must be original or adapted, and must not have had a public production in New York City (readings, workshops, and classroom presentations are acceptable).

  • Co-authored works are welcome, but must be submitted with a single point of contact.

  • Submissions are open to writers of all backgrounds; however, our mission emphasizes East Asian voices and narratives.

Deadline:

We review scripts on a rolling basis year-round.

To be considered for Shall See Theater Presents productions, submissions must be received by August 31, 2025.

Timeline & Feedback:

  • You will receive an initial response within 20 business days of submission.

  • While we cannot offer detailed feedback on every submission, we will let you know whether we would like to move forward with further review or conversation.

Confidentiality:

We treat all submissions as confidential material and will not share your work without your explicit permission. We encourage you to submit your script as a watermarked PDF for your protection.
