Position Summary

The Director of Community Engagement leads Shall See Theater’s effort to build and sustain meaningful, reciprocal relationships with New York City’s diverse communities. This role activates programming that centers East Asian narratives and aesthetics, and promotes civic participation, learning, and dialogue. Through strategic partnerships, co-created events, and education-driven outreach, the Director cultivates inclusive entry points into the theater’s work and ensures community voices remain core to our mission.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Partnership Building & Public Outreach

  • Research, identify, and build lasting partnerships with cultural organizations, schools, community leaders, civic groups, and social service agencies across NYC.

  • Co-create programs with partners that respond to community needs and align with Shall See Theater’s artistic mission.

  • Maintain a dynamic and organized database of community contacts, collaborators, and engagement history.

  • Represent the theater at public forums, community board meetings, and civic cultural initiatives.

Program Design, Development & Implementation

  • Design and execute inclusive, participatory programming including talkbacks, panels, “Community Nights,” community workshops, artist residencies, and public forums.

  • Align programs with Shall See’s artistic seasons and the lived experiences of community audiences.

  • Facilitate moderated discussions and collaborative events that use the theater’s productions as catalysts for reflection, cultural exchange, and dialogue.

  • Manage all logistics: timelines, staffing, material needs, partner coordination, and implementation for each initiative.

Education & Youth Engagement

  • Develop and support in-school residencies, youth-led theater workshops, and student ambassador programs in collaboration with the Education department.

  • Ensure programming is accessible, age-appropriate, and culturally relevant to New York City public school populations.

Audience Growth & Engagement

  • Develop strategies to expand audience diversity and deepen participation from historically excluded groups.

  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Digital departments on community-specific campaigns, co-branded outreach, and culturally resonant messaging.

  • Oversee group ticketing initiatives, community previews, and affinity-based audience development strategies.

Internal Collaboration & Institutional Integration

  • Work closely with Artistic, Production, and General Management teams to ensure mainstage productions are informed by and connected to community voices.

  • Coordinate with Development to support engagement-based fundraising, grant proposals, and reporting.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to publicly amplify the theater’s community-facing work through various media and partnerships.

Evaluation, Documentation & Reporting

  • Define engagement KPIs and track quantitative and qualitative program outcomes, including attendance, satisfaction, and long-term participation metrics.

  • Collect community feedback through surveys, listening sessions, and follow-up outreach.

  • Create and deliver reports to leadership, funders, and board stakeholders to inform future planning and communicate institutional impact.

Leadership & Budget Oversight

  • Supervise part-time community engagement staff, teaching artists, interns, and volunteer facilitators.

  • Develop and manage program budgets; coordinate with the Managing Director on institutional resource planning.

  • Support grant applications and reporting in coordination with the Development team.

观众拓展与参与

  • 制定策略,拓展观众多样性,并增强来自历史上被排除群体的参与度

  • 与市场营销及数字部门合作,制定针对特定社区的宣传策略与共品牌推广计划

  • 管理团体票务、社区预演及面向兴趣社群的观众发展项目

内部协作与机构整合

  • 与艺术、制作、总务团队紧密合作,确保剧院制作与社区声音紧密相连

  • 与发展部协调,推动与社区参与相关的筹资、基金申请及项目汇报

  • 与市场部协作,在媒体和宣传中加强社区项目的可见度

评估、记录与报告

  • 设定社区参与的关键绩效指标(KPI),并追踪出席人数、满意度及长期参与度等项目成效

  • 通过调查问卷、听证会及后续交流收集反馈

  • 向管理层、资助机构和董事会提交评估报告,以指导未来规划并呈现机构影响力

团队管理与预算控制

  • 负责兼职社区工作人员、教学艺术家、实习生及志愿者的招聘与管理

  • 制定并管理项目预算,与执行董事协调机构资源规划

  • 协助撰写资助申请并支持相关财务报告工作

Qualifications

  • Native in Mandarin Chinese and fluent in English.

  • 1+ years of experience in community engagement, education, public programming, or audience development, preferably within nonprofit arts or theater organizations in New York City. 

  • Deep understanding of community-building, partnership development, and equitable programming practices. 

  • Track record in designing and implementing successful public-facing, mission-aligned programs.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, especially in building trust across culturally diverse communities.

  • Skilled in project management, facilitation, event planning, and cross-department collaboration.

  • Strong written and verbal communication, including digital communication and public speaking.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by programming needs.
