Position Summary

The Literary Manager is a central member of Shall See Theater’s artistic team, responsible for the evaluation, development, and curation of new works and the selections and rewrites of published works. This position supports the company’s mission to bring East Asian narratives and aesthetics to a global audience by identifying exceptional new voices, supporting commissioned playwrights, and guiding scripts from submission to stage.

Key Responsibilities

Script Review & Evaluation

  • Manage open and invited script submissions. 

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of script readers. 

  • Create and maintain detailed tracking systems and feedback archives.

  • Prepare concise, timely, and insightful coverage summaries for artistic and executive review

Season & Project Development

  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director on season planning.

  • Recommend works for readings, workshops, commissions, and full productions.

  • Research and network to solicit work from emerging and established playwrights aligned with our mission.

Commissioning & Dramaturgical Oversight 

  • Act as a point of contact for commissioned writers.

  • Provide dramaturgical support throughout the development process, and/or assign dramaturgs to each project.

  • Schedule and moderate developmental readings, feedback sessions, and script meetings.

  • Maintain author contact lists, relationships with agents, and literary networks. 

  • Manage commissioning contracts and budgets in coordination with General Management.

Community & Audience Engagement

  • Coordinate dramaturgical resources with Education and Community Engagement teams to enrich contextual programming

  • Write copy for playbill materials, Upstage-Guide style content, and audience-facing narratives

Administrative Support & Reporting 

  • Maintain literary databases, folders, and production documentation. 

  • Track developmental milestones and report on metrics (readings, participants, commissions) to the Artistic and Managing Director. 

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Development to support artistic communication and fundraising efforts.

委约与编剧支持

  • 作为受委约编剧的主要联络人。

  • 在作品开发过程中提供剧作顾问支持,或为每个项目指派剧本顾问。

  • 安排并主持剧本发展性朗读会、反馈会议及剧本讨论。

  • 维护编剧通讯录,与代理人、出版方及文艺网络保持关系。

  • 与剧院总务管理团队协作,管理委约合同与预算。

社区与观众参与

  • 与教育及社区参与部门协作,提供文本研究资料,丰富观众背景理解。

  • 撰写节目册文案、观剧指南类内容及其他面向观众的解读性文本。

行政支持与报告

  • 维护文学资料数据库、文档及制作相关记录。

  • 跟踪剧本发展里程碑,并向艺术总监及执行管理层汇报关键指标(如朗读会、参与人数、委约项目等)。

  • 与市场推广及发展部协作,支持艺术传播与筹资传播内容的撰写与编辑。

Qualifications

  • Native in Mandarin Chinese and fluent in English.

  • BA or higher in English Literature, Chinese Literature, Theater Studies, Dramaturgy, or a related field of studies.

  • 1-2 years of experience in literary management, dramaturgy, or related field in both Chinese and English (including educational experience).

  • Strong understanding of new play development and commissioning processes.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Chinese and English.

  • Commitment to cultural equity, with a specific interest in East Asian narratives and underrepresented voices.

  • Familiarity with the New York theater landscape and contemporary playwrights.

  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, deadline-driven, and collaborative.

  • 母语为中文,具备流利的英文沟通能力。

  • 拥有英文文学、中文文学、戏剧研究、编剧顾问、戏剧构作或相关专业的学士学位或以上学历。

  • 拥有1至2年在中文和英文语境中从事文学管理、剧作顾问或相关工作的经验(包括学术/教育经验)。

  • 对新剧本开发及委约创作流程有深入理解。

  • 具备优秀的中英文书面与口头表达能力。

  • 认同文化公平的价值,特别关注东亚叙事与弱势声音的表达与呈现。

  • 熟悉纽约剧场生态与当代剧作家群体。

  • 注重细节,具备高度的组织能力、时间管理能力强,善于团队合作。
